February 5, 2024

It’s important to note that this information is current as of February 24th, 2024. Changes to benefits can be complicated and can vary depending on your individual circumstances. It’s always best to consult with one of Your Tax Accountant’s advisors!

Recently implemented changes:
  • Bereavement Support Payment (BSP): As of February 8th, 2024, eligibility for BSP has been extended. You no longer need to have been married or in a civil partnership to claim it. You can now claim BSP if you were cohabiting with your deceased partner and have a child or children together.
  • Local Housing Allowance (LHA): From April 2023, the LHA freeze was lifted, meaning it will now cover the cheapest 30% of properties in each area, potentially increasing support for private tenants on Universal Credit or Housing Benefit.
Upcoming changes:
  • Universal Credit (UC): Throughout 2024 and 2025, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) plans to move people on legacy benefits onto UC. This is a significant change and affects various allowances and brackets within UC.
  • Uprating: In April 2024, working-age benefits and disability benefits will be increased in line with inflation, currently at 6.7%. This will effectively raise allowances and brackets for many recipients.
  • Back to Work Plan: The government is set to introduce a new scheme targeting jobseekers who “disengage” from seeking employment. This may involve more intensive work coach support and potentially stricter sanctions, impacting the way benefits are accessed and maintained.
